Uprooted people in Champoor demand coordinated Tamil effort on resettlement

While Tamil activists are set to push for a billion-rupee compensation from the Sri Lankan State for the structural destruction caused to Champoor so far, the president of the genocidal State in Colombo is visiting to Champoor on Saturday to donate 13,000 rupees per family to 25 families together with a symbolic hand-over of their lands, news sources in Trincomalee told TamilNet on Friday. Meanwhile, the resettling uprooted Tamils said they had spent 30,000 rupees each during the last weeks alone to clear the freed lands. Although there are Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) showing a keen interest in providing support, there is no co-ordinated effort to channel assistance to resettle the people, the civil sources in Trincomalee said.

In the meantime, the Sri Lanka Gateway Industries (SLGI), a private limited, which was part of a group of companies that were owned by former SL president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s close relatives and brokers having close Chinese connections, has been refusing to vacate their container-based offices.

The SLGI has further repaired their video surveillance equipment attached to the containers, the people complain. The SLGI personnel have been telling the people during the elections that Mr Rajapaksa had vowed to secure the lands back to SLGI after the SL elections.

The SL Navy, which was under pressure to free the lands, has also been reluctant to handover the lands it had seized from the people.

Several families have now put up temporary huts in their lands.

The officials under the Resettlement Ministry led by UNP’s D.M. Swaminathan, have declined to assist the people saying they have no allocation for the resettlement in Champoor.

TNA’s R. Sampanthan has been reluctant to push for the resettlement before paving inroads to external Establishment’s seeking access to the strategic city of Trincomalee, a Tamil expert from Champoor said.

The people are closely watching the actions of the TNA after the elections, especially on further de-militarisation of Champoor, compensation and delivery of assistance to resettlement.

Tamils arrested at Colombo airport

Four Tamils have been arrested at Colombo airport over the last week and are being held in a high security prison in Negombo, JDS reported on Thursday.

Two men were arrested after being deported from Turkey, while a man and a teenage woman were detained as they were about to board a flight to Qatar.

K Rajkumar (36) from Batticaloa and Gengadaran Saranya (19) from Puthukkudiyirippu were arrested on August 18. Ms Saranya was going to join her husband in Switzerland, JDS said.

Kurunathan Nirushan (26) from Kopay and Frederick Lawrence from Ragama were arrested following their deportation from Turkey on August 16.

Another Tamil woman arrested at Colombo airport

A Tamil woman on her way out of Sri Lanka was arrested at Colombo airport on Thursday, the fifth Tamil to be arrested at the country’s main airport.

Jayanthini Siluvairasa (23) from Jaffna, was detained by the CID who said she was attempting to reach flee the country. Sources said that she tried to leave the country after facing harassment and threats from the CID for her connections with the LTTE.

Ms Siluvairasa was remanded until 25th August.

Sri Lanka ranks 122nd out of 152 countries in Human Freedom Index

Sri Lanka has ranked 122nd out of 152 countries in the Human Freedom Index compiled by the Fraser Institute, which was released earlier this week.

The Human Freedom Index, which uses 76 indicators of personal, civil and economic freedoms, such as Association, Assembly, and Civil Society, Rule of Law, Security and Safety, Expression to rank countries from around the world.

Using data collected from 2008-2012, Sri Lanka ranked 128th on personal freedom and 98th on economic freedom.

Cartoonist abduction investigation suspended due to ‘military pressure’

Sri Lanka’s prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe suspended the probe investigating the abduction of cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda due to warnings from the military that the inquiry could cause a stir within the military, a local paper reported.

Mr Wickremesinghe was informed by high-ranking military officials that several senior officers were involved in a unit set up for abductions and further inquiries could reveal the entire operation, and as such decided to suspend the probe until after the election.

The army officials said around 650 officers were attached in this unit, which was formed by then-army commander Sarath Fonseka during the armed conflict. After 2009 the unit is said to have continued under Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and included current chief of staff of the army Jagath Jayasuriya.

A sergeant major, currently in custody, earlier this month admitted to questioning the cartoonist, after years of denial of knowledge of his whereabouts by the military.

Identity cards of abducted Tamil youth found on Navy officer

Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) revealed that the identity cards of abducted Tamil youth were found in the possession of a Sri Lankan navy officer.

Investigating the abduction of six Tamil youth from Colombo, Police spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said, “these abductions have taken place during the latter part of the war and they had been detained at Navy camps in Trincomalee and at Chaithya Road in Colombo”.

“National identity cards of these abducted youths had been found in the possession of one Navy officer at the time of his arrest,” he added.

No one has yet been charged with the abductions.

The spokesperson went on to state that whilst two of the suspected navy officers had since retired, “it is also stated that some, who are still in service, are making efforts to safeguard the suspects”.

வாக்களிப்பைக் குழப்பும் எந்த முயற்சியும் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டால், காவல்துறையினர் நிலைமையைக் கட்டுப்படுத்த, அதிகபட்ச பலத்தைப் பயன்படுத்தவும் தாம் உத்தரவிட்டுள்ளதாகவும் அவர் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளார்.

தேர்தல் பாதுகாப்பு பணியில் காவல்துறையினர் மற்றும் அதிரடிப்படையினர் 75,000 பேர் ஈடுபடவுள்ளனர்.

இவர்களில் 12,399 வாக்களிப்பு நிலையங்களில், தலா இருவர் வீதமும், 5700 காவல்துறையினர், ரோந்துப் பணியிலும், ஈடுபடவுள்ளனர்.

மேலும், எந்த அவசர நிலையையும் சமாளிப்பதற்காக 1300 இற்கு அதிகமான கலகத் தடுப்பு காவல்துறையினரும் பணியில் ஈடுபடுவர்.

நாளை காவல்துறையினரால், 220 வீதித்தடைகள் ஏற்படுத்தப்படும் என்றும் தேர்தல் திணைக்களத் தகவல்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

Rajapaksa claims Tamil leaders are ‘dividing the country’

Sri Lanka’s former President Mahinda Rajapaksa criticised Tamil leaders for allegdly “dividing the country” in comments made to the BBC, in the run up to next week’s general elections.

Speaking to the BBC’s Justin Rowlatt, Mr Rajapaksa was asked whether he thought it possible that Sri Lanka would be split under the current government. “Yes, certainly because this is the feeling of the people,” he replied.

Mr Rajapaska went on to criticise Tamil political leaders for remarks made in the run up to the elections.

“I mean you just listen to the Tamil leaders speeches,” said Mr Rajapaska. “They have already divided the country.”

In the run up to the election, Tamil political parties in the North-East were unanimous in their calls for an international investigation into the massacre of tens of thousands of Tamils during the closing stages of the armed conflict in 2009. Mr Rajapaksa was president and commander in chief of Sri Lanka at the time, overseeing the military assault on the North-East.

His comments come as the Tamil National Alliance’s spokesperson Suresh Premachandran to the BBC that the possibility of an armed struggle may arise in the future, if Tamil rights were not respected. “If the Tamils cannot enjoy the same rights which the others are enjoying then you know – you never know what will happen,” said Mr Premachandran.

“It’s not a threat,” reiterated the TNA spokesperson, but added “maybe in the future it might be a reality”.

Sri Lanka’s On-going Crimes Against Humanity

London, 23 July, 2015 — Six years after the end Sri Lanka’s civil war, a new report by the International Truth & Justice Project exposes the systematic persecution of the Tamil community through torture, rape, illegal detention and killings committed by the state authorities.

Through careful research brought to life by the vivid horror of victim testimonials, the report, Still Unfinished War: Sri Lanka’s Survivors of Torture and Sexual Violence 2009-2015, shows how the use of torture and sexual violence is part of a well-coordinated policy, planned at the highest level of the Sri Lankan government and its security forces.

The report goes as far as to identify torturers and rapists. It also pinpoints 41 detention facilities, including secret camps, where victims say they were abused after the war. It lays bare the continuation of state-organised abductions, torture and sexual violence by the security forces long after the change of government in January 2015.

The victims’ stories are harrowing, many are deeply traumatised and continue to suffer mentally long after their detainment. Their families suffer too in the form of reprisals. More than a quarter of the 155 victims interviewed said that their close family members had been severely punished after they had escaped abroad.

The report warns the international community they will fail the victims of this conflict if they do not take action. It calls upon the UN Security Council to refer its report to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court for further action against those who bear the greatest responsibility.

TNA’s manifesto a threat to SL sovereignty: Sri Lankan Minister

United Citizens’ Front (UCF) Leader Tissa Attanayake said today the Tamil National Alliance’s (TNA) manifesto is a threat to the country’s sovereignty because it calls for the pardoning of the LTTE. He said the TNA’s manifesto released on Saturday is a challenge to the war victory because it wants a re-merger of the North and East under federal structure and right to self-determination for Sri Lankan Tamils. Mr. Attanayake claimed that TNA’s demand to implement the resolutions adopted at the UNHRC from 2012 to 2014 was behind its moves to collaborate with the UNFGG at the general elections.

He questioned the rationale behind the TNA’s demand for pardoning the LTTE and the call for the speeding up of the ongoing inquiries allegations of human rights violations during the armed conflict. “The TNA wants to political solution to the national question that goes beyond the 13th Amendment. It has vowed to support the UNP at the elections,” he claimed. Mr. Attanayake said Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera and Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka should give their views on the TNA’s manifesto because they speak of sovereignty of the country.

The TNA, which comprises the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO), Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) and the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), is contesting the general election in the districts of Jaffna, Vanni, Batticaloa, Digamadulla (also known as Ampara) and Trincomalee in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
